Reading the English-translated novels and not only do they have a picture of a blonde-haired Caucasian model on the covers of the novels, but reading Holo's description, it also turns out that she has blonde-hair.
So, I wonder why all of the illustrations by Jyuu Ayakura show Holo as having brown hair.
Any thoughts on this from anyone else?

Unless I'm mistaken, there's no such thing as a blonde wolf.
I'm pretty sure it says in the novel(s) that she had "brown" hair. The manga book covers ( mainly? ) show her with brown hair.
In the anime and various illustrations, she seems to vary between red and brown.
Redheads are awesome.
Enough said. That's a change I don't mind at all.
( also, her eyes vary from slightly red to glowing red, notice? - night vision? and her fox stole is on the golden side of orange? probably to make it stand out.)
Now - why does Kraft have silver hair at his age?
I think I've got his character figured out at last. new thread...

You did read my post in the Season 3 thread, right? I took an excerpt from the actual volume 4 novel, where it says, "The girl with her dark red eyes and flaxen hair was named Holo" (Hasekura 4).
You got that, right? Below is the definition of the word "flaxen" when used in the above's context:
Flaxen:
Plus, haven't you ever noticed that on the cover of the novels is a blonde Caucasian model who's dressed up as Holo? There's a reason for that, and that is because Hasekura wrote her as a blonde. The manga, anime, and the novels' illustrations do portray Holo as a brunette, but the novels' covers and Hasekura's words depict her as being a blonde.

Perhaps you are right? I don't know. I'm not here to argue about things.
It's also possible that the English translators confused a kanji or two?
They seem to be leaning to sound like a navive English novel more than a direct translation
(which indeed is less pleasing to readers who aren't used to subtitle style dialogue)
For example, EVERY version of Holo's "you can't see my face, Zheren" and other "poetic monologues" are a little different?
Really, a person's behavior being based on hair color is as much a cultural myth as anything, but she would seem to fit the "fesity" profile?
I generally prefer the anime to the novels, so I shall continue to think of her as a redhead?
This "Canon" is still fairly easy, I recently did research on Star Wars - it has grown incredibly convoluted with novels, comics, and animations!
Just give us series 3, we won't complain if she has blue hair!

I had a fine reply, but the message board ATE it?
EDIT: And then it un-ate it? Because both are back.
Basically, you may be right? I don't like to argue.
But I generally like the anime better than the novels, and there I "see red", which is how I like it.

I don't really care for red-heads all that much, to be honest.
The reason why they might have chosen to make Holo's hair reddish on the anime, is because it would look better for when she changed into her giant wolf form. On the book covers, Holo's tail and ears are "flaxen" or yellow-colored. But, there's no such thing as a flaxen, or blonde wolf. Holo would be more like a dog if her wolf form matched her hair color.
Wolf fur is normally colored black, grey, white, or a combination of the three. However, they also have red wolves. Making Holo a red wolf on the anime is more visually appealing for when she changes into a wolf.
However, Hasekura apparently meant for Holo to be a blonde. So, that's how I've been trying to imagine Holo when I read the novels.
Maybe the color intended is something like golden brown? A yellow yet brown color? That would fit both interpretations and, as always, realistic hair colors must always step aside when the anime wants visual flair.

There are people that just have a gene that makes them go gray early. Actor Steve Martin went gray really early, and a few years back the guy that won American Idol was also gray and in his twenties.

Just remember - a really good story will keep you coming back, even if you know the plot, and there are always new things to notice.
That is indeed true - BUT I think it's more likely a visual metaphor -
(note the "colors of the soul" and "side colors", indicating the authors' interest in this. )
I had posed that as a psychological question, and my answer to it is -
...he is "a ghost". A merchant, thus a traveler, an outsider wherever he goes, from a home we know less about than Yoitz itself! ( and next novel? I hear... )
He can't decide to commit to Holo, and so keeps her near but not too near.
Also, though still young, he is road wise, at times even "world weary" -
strife ( such as wolf attacks ) can make a persons hair white also
(note Diana shares most of these traits, and is also quite pale. She's something of a Goth beauty! )
Holo's intensity of life is shown by her RED hair and eyes!
And they're surrounded by blondes! Stereotypicially used as symbols of innocence, youth, or virtue?
Though increasingly, it may be an ironic usage! As their virtue is hypocritical - Eve, Amarti.
or ambivalent - Nora - perhaps the most innocent character? But she acts as a third wheel, setting up a minor love triangle with Lawrence
Rigolo - who is a "good guy"? to our heroes but posesses powers that could easily be used for evil.
etc.

Apologies for bumping this thread, but I started reading novel 5 the other day and thought of this thread almost immediately when I came upon a certain sentence in the prologue.
"Though she now had a blanket wrapped around herself so thoroughly that is was hard to tell if she was a boy or a girl, the beauty of her features would turn any head, and her long, chestnut-brown hair, fine enough to be the pride of any nobleman's daughter, easily holding the attention of male passersby."
Golden-brown would be a happy medium between the two descriptions.
I'm probably just going to stick with her hair looking like it does in the anime and color illustrations.
