@batou01 that commentary booklet was translated from the Japanese set so is referring to the Japanese version which, as screenshots show, looks markedly different to FUNimation's (and not just in terms of black levels).
For more proof of that, see this post regarding black levels and banding.

If FUNimation was giving out free cupcakes, ya'll are the kinda people who'd complain if they had vanilla frosting instead of chocolate.
Psh. Whatever.
But Funi is not giving out free cupcakes, they're selling cupcakes for 50$ with "Happy Dirthday" written on them, sure the Japanese cupcakes that they were based off of had the misspelling but now it's in neon icing.
I mean it's not a perfect metaphor but credit where credit is due, it's not something people will be happy with.
Re: Serial Experiments Lain Blu-Ray Quality/Lack thereof
I don't get why people are "settling" for such an inferior release. That just gives Funimation the go-ahead to do this again and again. For $50+ I expected a quality product from toe to toe, inch by inch. I am fed up with people saying it couldn't be any better a release but it can. It absolutely can be a better product. If you canttruly see the difference, you need to seriously get your eyes checked. People are settling for a inferior product. It's a shame, an absolute shame and you should be ashamed for being okay with mediocre after spending this money which you probably worked hard for.
Re: Serial Experiments Lain Blu-Ray Quality/Lack thereof
If it wasn't for the fact I own the Japanese release, I would be infuriated, believe me.
There is no excuse for not releasing a perfect product, especially with all that hype they gave it, and how expensive it was.
I would have bought it anyway (I collect Lain stuff), but its sad one can't trust a company to handle things better.
And if they do release something of this caliber again, I will be hesitant to buy it.

The reason why people are settling for this is because this anime is available again for fans to buy it.sure,it could be better but this is what Funi got.this show was done in 1998,remastering an anime that old is not easy.just be glad Funi is putting it out there for all to see.an inferior product it is not.

This is a very good point you make here - I think it's important that as a customer to voice your grievance with a product that you feel is subpar in terms of quality. This is good for Funimation so they can learn for next time to take this feedback into consideration.
It reminds of a seminar we went to for the company I work for - they said if a customer complains about something, it's good because they want to see the company they buy from do it right. However, a company should fear the customer who says nothing, and simply stops buying because; the company loses the customer, and they don't get the feedback thus they fail to understand why they lost the customer.
Now I say this because I've been reading the posts and looked at the screen comparisions and to me it looks like something worth making a fuss about. Hopfully Funimation have taken the information in and are looking to learn from it.

Most of my thoughts on this issue was covered already, so I won't repeat.
But if anything, Funi's release is a lot better than Pioneer's DVDs.
Also, my copy's box and art book have no issues at all, thankfully.
