Serial Experiments Lain Blu-Ray Quality/Lack thereof

http://www.kentaiblog.com/2012/11/serial-experiments-lame.html Talks about the video quality issues on this release. I have waited quite a while for this release only to receive this? Funimation, I am not only extremely disappointed, but will be contacting about this as it is outright unacceptable.

I'll admit I got a pretty good laugh out of that review. But seriously, calm yo tits.

I am being rather calm about this (Do note that I am not saying anything outright derisive on the matter) and I feel that your response is in rather poor taste. The basic reality is that the video quality of this release is sub-par at best and I am trying to give Funimation some constructive criticism and at the same time warn others about these quality issues given the price of this release.

Re: Serial Experiments Lain Blu-Ray Quality/Lack thereof

From what I can tell lots of older anime has quality issues when its released on Blu-Ray, not just here in the U.S. But in Japan as well, I mean many of these shows weren't made in HD, and probably never intended to be put out in a format like Blu-ray. And sadly not every anime company be it in Japan or the U.S. has the money to make their older animations look as nice on Blu-Ray like big companies such as Disney or Warner Bros. do. So while I can understand your complaints, I think its important to realized the quality of the Upscale/transfer isn't always something Funi or others can control as much as they would like.

But I digress.

The problem with that argument is that Lain was recently restored/remastered (even reanimated) specifically for a high definition format.

The banding has already been brought up on the Fandom Post, but as superdry asks, I'm curious if the banding is as noticeable on a decent television set, as opposed to a computer monitor.

There have also been some packaging issues brought up, such as dirt under the top coating of the 320 page art book, and the spine peeling off the artbox.

I use a 30" CRT HDTV for my home theater and the banding is very present on it.

I have an Samsung 60" LED HDTV and the banding is extremely noticeable and present, it just kills the experience. Biggest waste of money I've made all year, without question.

@EOP: Oh I see, well then that is indeed a problem. Tsk Tsk Funimation, your getting lazy on me again. Oh well, guess i'll take the Lain BD set off my list of stuff to get. Shame really its a quality anime, oh well.

Heres hoping future print runs of the set will fix the problems it has *knock on wood*

For a $90 MSRP release, that is rather disappointing. On the other hand, it's a Lain BD, so I pretty much have to buy it anyways.

Unless they decide to rerelease the set on 3 dual layered Blu Rays instead of one dual layer and a single layer it won't be fixed. That's the problem with how FUNimation authors their discs, when you cram nine episodes on a DL Blu-Ray of course visual quality suffers. They're charging $90 retail for this box set, they could have easily absorbed the cost of 3 DL Blu-Rays per unit.

Well that's just terrible news. And I sold my Signature Series box set of Lain because I planned on getting this one...
